Portico Excavation Report
In 2004, the Montpelier Archaeology Department excavated the entire area below and around the front Portico on the Montpelier mansion. These excavations were in advance of grade changes for the restoration of the mansion and to stabilize the portico columns. Excavations revealed the mid 19th century changes that occurred at the Portico and helped pull together multiple periods of landscape changes from during the early to mid 19th century. While the only Madison-era deposits encountered during these excavations were the 18th century building trenches of the main block of the mansion, the restoration of the grade and front yard would not have been possible without information gleaned from these important but often overlooked excavations.
