Meals and Accommodations

The $500 stipend that NEH provides for each participant will be used to pay for meals and accommodations during the Workshop. Additional grants available to the Center for the Constitution ensure that there will be no additional cost to program participants for housing or meals.

All meals will be provided at James Madison's Montpelier. Accommodations will be provided for participants in multiple locations: the Constitutional Village at James Madison's Montpelier; the Holiday Inn Express in Orange, VA; and at bed and breakfast locations in and around Orange, VA. Each of the sites provides comfortable accommodations in a relaxed atmosphere. Daily transportation to and from accommodation locations and Montpelier will be provided by the Center. There are differences in the types of accommodations and amenities available, and where participants reside will affect their daily travel schedule. Participants will be asked to indicate their preference on accommodations, and we will attempt to honor as many requests as possible. However, space is limited at all sites, so it is unlikely that every request will be honored. The information below should help aid in your decision on which location you prefer.

Montpelier

The Constitutional Village at James Madison's Montpelier

The Constitutional Village at Montpelier includes twenty bedrooms spread out over four restored farmhouses constructed in the early 20th century. The houses are within walking distance of Lewis Hall, where all morning lectures will take place and all meals will be provided for all NEH Workshop participants throughout the week.

The houses in the Constitutional Village provide an ideal space for conversing after program activities and relaxing late into the evening. All houses offer a lounge area and patios or porches where seminar participants can congregate. Each house has kitchen or kitchenette facilities, including refrigerators, microwaves, sinks, and toaster ovens. Most of the houses have complete kitchens, including a full-size stove. Some light snacks and beverages are provided. Each house has at least two telephones, and all participants have access to laundry facilities located in two of the four homes.

Many of the bedrooms feature comfortable chairs, reading lamps, and a desk or table where participants can hook their laptops to the Internet. Most rooms are wired for Internet access. Some have private baths; some have shared baths on the same floor. Room configurations include one or two twin beds, one double bed, or one queen-size bed. Sheets and towels are provided. In keeping with the spirit of the Constitutional Village as a center for learning and thoughtful inquiry, televisions are not provided, in order to encourage seminar participants to use their free time for study, reflection, and conversation with their housemates.
