Montpelier, from the 1700s to the Jim Crow EraMontpelier's storied history continued well into the 20th century. After Dolley Madison sold Montpelier in 1844, the estate changed hands several times before its purchase by William duPont in 1901, and then the transfer of the estate to the National Trust for Historic Preservation by his daughter, Marion duPont Scott.
