To reflect their increasing prominence in the local community, James Madison, Sr. and Nelly Conway-Madison ordered the construction of the Georgian mansion of Montpelier just over a quarter-mile from the original homestead of Mount Pleasant.  This new home was built in an ordered, symmetric Georgian core that was at the heart of their broader plantation home that was maintained by both agrarian and industrial activities.
