Postbellum Sites (1865-1900)

Research & Collections

During surveys across the property, archaeologists have located close to a dozen post-emancipation sites across the property.  It is likely that many of these sites are the homes of freed slaves who were enslaved here at Montpelier before the war.  We are documenting these archaeological sites for protection and future excavations.

Spring at a freedman's home on the Montpelier property.  This site was discovered (the house site and spring) during surveys of Chicken Mountain (western portion of the property).
