Bequests
If you plan to make a charitable gift by will, please think it through carefully. Then, meet with your attorney to discuss and update your will. Tell him or her exactly what you want to do and be as clear as possible in describing what you want given to whom.
We hope you will tell us when you have named The Montpelier Foundation in your will. We would very much like the opportunity to thank you for your generosity.
Unrestricted Bequest Sample Language
You may designate your bequest to The Montpelier Foundation to be used for any purpose (an "unrestricted bequest"). Those funds will be applied to the greatest needs at the time your bequest is realized and will provide much-needed funds to meet emerging needs.
“I, [Name], of [City, State, ZIP], give to The Montpelier Foundation, located in Orange, Virginia, the sum of $________ [or property described herein] [or _______ percent (___%) of the rest of my estate] to be used by The Montpelier Foundation in its discretion for its general purposes.”
Restricted Bequest Sample Language
You may instead designate a specific purpose for your bequest (a "restricted bequest"). For example, a gift may be earmarked to endow a staff position or acquisition fund, for research support, for capital improvements, or any program that captures your imagination and passion.
“I, [Name], of [City, State, ZIP], give to The Montpelier Foundation, located in Orange, Virginia, the sum of $________ [or property described herein] [or _______ percent (___%) of the rest of my estate] to be used by The Montpelier Foundation for the following purpose:________________________________.
If you want to restrict your bequest to a particular school or program, we recommend that you ask Montpelier Foundation officials to review your intended provision to be certain that your wishes will be carried out.
