SUMMARY:Educator Seminar: Citizenship and Democracy after the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:After the American Revolution, Americans went from being subjects of a king to citizens of a shared democracy. But who was a citizen? And what did it mean to be a citizen? This seminar will explore these questions to understand how ordinary Americans from all backgrounds claimed a role for themselves in the new United States’s public life. At a time when Americans are seeking to rebuild their democratic culture, this seminar will explore how Americans past defined citizenship and cultivated a civic culture in the decades following American independence.\nJohann Neem is an historian of early American history. He is the author and editor of several books including Democracy’s Schools: The Rise of Public Education in America and Creating a Nation of Joiners. With Joanne B. Freeman, he edited the essay collection Jeffersonians in Power. His writing has appeared in such places as USA Today, the Washington Post, the Hedgehog Review, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and The New Republic. He has been interviewed on issues relating to America’s 250th by the New York Times, the Guardian, the Atlantic, and Mother Jones, among other venues. Neem is a professor of history at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. His website is www.johannneem.com.\n
