The program encourages families to engage with Montpelier through exploration, discussion, and creative activities.\n\nWe the Kids Wednesday: Explore the American Revolution\nDate:  Wednesday, July 8, 2026 (registration is closed)\nTime: 9:30am-12:00pm\nCost: Adults (18+) – $10.00, Youth (5-17) – $8.00, Family Ticket (includes up to 4 participants) – $30.00, Children 4 & under free, Free to Family Membership holders.\nSpaces Available: 40\nProgram Description: Join We the Kids on Wednesday July 1st or July 8th to explore the American Revolution. Learn about how James Madison, Moses the blacksmith, and others at Montpelier navigated the Revolutionary War. How are their revolutionary ideas and actions still with us today? \nParticipate in some revolution inspired crafts throughout the morning to take home. \nContent Note: Some artworks in the house feature unclothed human form as part of classical artistic traditions. These works will not be the focus of the program itself. In his time, art was more than decoration. Paintings, objects, and design choices helped people express who they were and what they valued.\nJoin us for a hands-on family program at Montpelier, where we’ll take a closer look at the art and objects found in select rooms of Madison’s home. Together, we’ll explore questions like: What is art? Why do people create decorative objects? And how can art and everyday items help us understand people and the world around them?\nAfter exploring, families will have the chance to create their own work of art inspired by Montpelier to take home!\nContent Note: Some artworks in the house feature unclothed human form as part of classical artistic traditions. Their stories are a big part of Montpelier’s history and can show us what it means to be strong and never give up.\nJoin us as we follow the journeys of Paul Jennings, who bought his freedom, Catherine Taylor, who won hers in court, and Anthony, who set out to find his own. You will also discover how many others found ways to live with agency and purpose, even though their freedom was denied.\nTogether, we will also explore the Gilmore Cabin, a Reconstruction-era freedman’s cabin still standing on Montpelier’s grounds. You’ll get a glimpse into the everyday lives of the children who lived there and leave with a hand-painted souvenir inspired by their spirit and strength. \n\nProgram Details:\n\nThis is a paid program. Preregistration is required.\nAll adults must be accompanied by a child, and we kindly ask that no adults be left unattended.\nThis program includes access to The Mere Distinction of Colour exhibit. House tours may be purchased separately if desired.\nA property pass is included with this program. A Property Pass provides admission to Montpelier’s gardens, grounds, trails, and exhibits including: the Annie duPont Formal Garden, The Mere Distinction of Colour exhibition, the Landmark Forest, 8 miles of walking and hiking trails, Madison family cemetery, Montpelier Burial Grounds\ of the Enslaved, picnic grounds, and more!\n\n \n
