SUMMARY:Two-Day Blacksmithing and Oral History Expedition
DESCRIPTION:Two-Day Blacksmithing and Oral History Program\nDuring this special two-day program, we will be hosting Jeffery Mabry and Paul Fritz (local blacksmiths with knowledge of the historic trade) to demonstrate basic blacksmithing techniques and learn about collecting oral history regarding tradespeople in the post-emancipation era. The archaeology department is investigating an 18th-century Blacksmith shop that was run by Moses, an enslaved blacksmith owned by James Madison, Sr. Moses ran the blacksmith shop during the American Revolution. Moses’ blacksmith shop provided supplies for the Continental Army during the War. We are investigating this site to find evidence for the forge, items produced, and structures that were present at the site. The site is adjacent to the iconic Madison-era 1810s-era temple near the Montpelier main house. Moses’s blacsksmith shop was moved during the 1810s reconfiguration of the main house formal grounds. For the long-term goals of this project, see the following StoryMap on Blacksmithing at Montpelier. During the Summer of 2026 we will be both surveying portions of Moses’ 18th century Blacksmith Shop and performing more extensive excavation on selected areas of Moses’ shop. This Fall program will provide a wrap up for the season.\nDuring this program, participants will take part in excavations and blacksmithing activities at the site, including:\n\nLive blacksmithing demonstrations with the chance for hands-on training at the anvil with heritage blacksmiths (including blacksmiths from Jackson Shop).\nExcavations in 5ft x 5ft units looking for the remains of forges at the site\nProcessing archaeological finds with experienced blacksmiths interpreting the 18th-century iron objects (including tools, clipped iron, and slag) recovered from the site\nLearn about oral history and collecting family stories about Black Experise in the Post-Emancipation Era\n\nCosts and Deposit\nCost: $600.00 for the two-day program\nDeposit: $300.00\nWe have payment options– a non-refundable deposit is all you need to reserve your space on one of our programs!
