Archaeologists rely on a number of techniques and methods to locate potential excavation sites. During the course of this long weekend, our professional staff will lead you on a deep-dive into the site location process, focusing primarily on shovel test pit excavation - the most common archaeological survey method. Participants will also learn about how shovel test pits are used at Montpelier in conjunction with other survey techniques, including metal detector survey, liDAR, and geophysical survey. We welcome anyone who is interested in learning about how archaeologists identify archaeological sites, and participate in these methods! Prospective or current archaeology students will find this program especially helpful!
