Walk often-unseen Montpelier landscapes to learn about the discovery and interpretation of archaeological sites, cemeteries, and Civil War encampments.

Montpelier's Dr. Matthew Reeves, Director of Archaeology and Landscape Restoration, will lead this walking tour of the remote portions of Montpelier. The tour will visit a portion of the plantation that was abandoned following Dolley's sale of Montpelier in 1844. Matt's team located this collection of Madison-era barns and slave quarters as part of a metal detector survey funded by National Geographic in 2013. Participants should be ready to hike rugged and muddy terrain that involves some bushwhacking.
