Excavate: Constitution Day Archaeology Expedition
During the Constitution Day Archaeology Expedition, we will be working at a site where metal detector survey recently located several homes for enslaved families dating to the 1820s. The following is a schedule for the two-day program:
- Thursday Sept 19th-arrival dinner at Arlington House (6:00)-optional
- Friday, Sept 20-Temple Site of Enslaved Homes
- 9:00-10:00 Below the Temple of Liberty Tour
- 10:00-12:00 Excavations at Temple Site (homes of enslaved families)
- 12:00-1:00 Lunch
- 1:00-4:00 Excavations at Temple Site (homes of enslaved families)
- 4:30-Wine Tasting from local vineyard at Lewis Hall (Sweet Vines hosting)
- Saturday, Sept 21-Constitution Day
- 8:00-10:30 Tour of East Woods
- 11:00-11:45 Book talk and signing (Lyndsay Cormack-How to Raise a Citizen)
- 12:00-12:45–Lunch at Visitors Center (Food Truck–TBD)
- 1:00-2:00 Tour of Home Farm
- 2:00-Tour of Montpelier Burial Ground of the Enslaved
Excavation Expeditions
The Archaeology Excavation Expedition is one of Montpelier’s most popular participatory programs. These are hands-on educational experiences in which you will work side-by-side with professional archaeologists on actual archaeological research sites on the Montpelier property! Learn the techniques and processes of archaeology while contributing to the discovery and preservation of history.
Costs and Deposit
Cost: $300.00 for the two-day program
We have payment options– a non-refundable deposit is all you need to reserve your space on one of our programs!
Note: Descendants and African-American community members are welcome to attend at no cost
