We at Montpelier are saddened by the passing of the 41st President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush.

Montpelier had the honor of hosting the then president in 1991 at the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Bill of Rights. During his speech on December 16, he announced that he was planning to allocate $1 million in Federal support for the restoration of Madison's home. He also signed the Presidential proclamation of the bicentennial celebration of the Bill of Rights on Montpelier grounds.

President Bush once remarked that the Constitution isn't "simply dry ink marking on brittle old parchment. It is the spirit that animates the American nation." We at Montpelier share, and plan to carry forth, this sentiment into the future.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and loved ones.
