During these years, both James and Dolley Madison return to the service of their country—James first as secretary of state under Thomas Jefferson and then fourth president of the United States, and Dolley fashioning her own role as first First Lady.  Frequently visiting Montpelier while escape the "malarial months" of Washington, D.C. they would envision radical changes to the mansion and landscape in 1809-1812.  This is the mansion you see today.
