What to Expect
Upon entering Montpelier's main entrance, follow signs to the Visitor Center, where you can park and purchase a mansion ticket. An orientation film will introduce you to the history of Montpelier and to James and Dolley Madison. A short 1/3 mile walk will lead you from the Visitor Center to the mansion for your tour. Tours last between 1-2 hours depending on tour options.
We invite you to explore the James Madison Trails and gardens, as well as the Grills Gallery and the duPont Gallery located inside the David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center. The Museum Shop has a variety of books and mementos that allow you to bring your Montpelier experience home.
Please keep in mind that spending time at Montpelier involves a fair amount of walking and standing.
Allow at least 2–3 hours for the full Montpelier experience.
Restrooms are located in the Visitor Center and in the Archaeology Lab. There are no restrooms in the Mansion.
The Courtyard Café and Museum Shop are located in the Visitor Center.
Because the grounds, gardens, and archaeological sites are such an essential part of the Montpelier experience, we recommend that visitors wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes.
Benches are available for visitors both inside and outside the mansion, and along the walkways to the garden and forests. Picnic tables are available behind the visitor center.
Make a weekend of it! Whether you're looking for modern hotel accommodations or a charming inn, the Montpelier area has much to offer.
