COME DIG WITH US! REGISTER TO RECEIVE MORE INFORMATION!
Work side-by-side with our staff of archaeologists to discover, excavate, and preserve the past on the Montpelier property in an archaeological program specifically for high school students!
Week Long High School Excavation
The High School Archaeology Excavation is a great beginner’s step into the world of Archaeology. This is a week-long hands-on educational experience in which you will work side-by-side with professional archaeologists on actual archaeological research sites on the Montpelier property. While digging through Madison-era deposits, you will experience the excitement of uncovering artifacts and features that have been buried for more than two centuries! This is a perfect program for families to experience together.
During the 2026 Season, the Montpelier Archaeology Department is investigating an 18th-century Blacksmith Shop that was run by Moses, an enslaved blacksmith during the ownership period of James Madison, Sr. Moses ran the Blacksmith Shop during the American Revolution and even provided supplies for the Continental Army during the War. We are investigating this site to find evidence for the location of the forge, to confirm the types of items produced, and to clarify the structures that were present at the site. The site is adjacent to James Madison Jr.’s iconic 1810s-era Temple in the foreground of the Montpelier main house. Moses’s Blacksmith Shop was eventually moved during the 1810s reconfiguration of the main house formal grounds, potentially to build the Temple itself. During the Fall of 2025 we surveyed the area of Moses’ 18th century Blacksmith Shop and opened initial exploratory units. During the 2026 season we will do more extensive excavation of Moses’ shop as we seek to better understand the expertise and contributions of Moses and the other highly skilled craftsmen that worked in the shop. For the long-term goals of this project, see the following StoryMap on Blacksmithing at Montpelier.
Come join us in utilizing archaeology to explore the concepts of Liberty and Legacy at one of America’s most significant historic sites: James Madison’s Montpelier. Search for clues from the past, excavating side by side with Montpelier’s archaeologists, as we conduct excavations in our efforts to memorialize and understand those who built Montpelier, and learn about the contributions of all those who called Montpelier home. Get behind-the-scenes specialty tours with Montpelier’s experts, and be among the first to conduct lab analysis at the Archaeology Department’s new lab facility Community Archaeology Lab at Montpelier (CALM).
Week Long Excavations
The Archaeology Excavation Expedition is one of Montpelier’s most popular participatory programs. This is a week-long, hands-on educational experience in which you will work side-by-side with professional archaeologists and fellow expeditioners performing excavation and survey of archaeological research sites on the Montpelier property! You will learn the techniques and processes of archaeology while contributing to the discovery and preservation of history. In addition to the field experience, you will spend a day with the Archaeology Lab, where you will be introduced to the post-excavation analysis of archaeological materials excavated from dig sites on the property!
