Reconstruct: Historic Masonry Expedition with Fairfield
This is a Two-Day, hands-on educational experience in which you will work side-by-side with professional archaeologists and masons to preserve historic building sites at Montpelier. The expedition will focus on replacing the failed mortar joints at two mid 19th century houses at Montpelier (Arlington House and the Dr. Madison/Washington House’s historic chimneys both dating to the mid 19th century). We will review mixing of period-appropriate mortar mixes, brick repairs, and recording existing conditions. The team will be led by historic mason, Kenneth Tappan of the Fairfield Foundation.

Our focus with the trade program is heritage masonry that provides participants with the range of knowledge needed for the preservation of historic structures. Our programs are attended by both historic home owners as well as students and professionals of historic preservation and historic trades. Participants will learn the techniques and materials needed for masonry restoration/stabilization and proper recording techniques for historic fabric.
