Program Description: More than 300 men, women, and children were enslaved at Montpelier. Their stories are a big part of Montpelier’s history and can show us what it means to be strong and never give up.
Join us as we follow the journeys of Paul Jennings, who bought his freedom, Catherine Taylor, who won hers in court, and Anthony, who set out to find his own. You will also discover how many others found ways to live with agency and purpose, even though their freedom was denied.
Together, we will also explore the Gilmore Cabin, a Reconstruction-era freedman’s cabin still standing on Montpelier’s grounds. You’ll get a glimpse into the everyday lives of the children who lived there and leave with a hand-painted souvenir inspired by their spirit and strength.
