James Madison's Montpelier Names Dr. Kelley Fanto Deetz President and Chief Executive Officer
ORANGE, Va. — The Montpelier Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kelley Fanto Deetz as President and Chief Executive Officer of James Madison’s Montpelier.
A nationally recognized historian, author, educator, and public scholar, Dr. Deetz has built a distinguished career in public history and historic preservation. She joined Montpelier in 2025 as Chief Advancement Officer and has played a leading role in establishing the Foundation’s strategic plan and expanding its programs. Prior to joining Montpelier, she held leadership positions at prominent cultural institutions and earned a reputation as an innovative thinker and collaborator committed to excellence in education and public engagement. A graduate of the College of William & Mary, she earned her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees at the University of California at Berkeley.
Dr. Deetz has played an integral role in advancing Montpelier’s strategic priorities, strengthening partnerships, and deepening engagement with visitors, supporters, descendants, and community stakeholders. As President and CEO, she will lead the organization in its mission to preserve and share the history and enduring relevance of James Madison, architect of the US Constitution and fourth president, while fostering meaningful dialogue about the American experience.

Krista Costello, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, who has served as Acting President and CEO during the leadership transition, expressed enthusiasm for the future under Dr. Deetz’s leadership.

Dr. Deetz assumes leadership on August 1, 2026, as Montpelier continues to broaden its educational reach, steward one of the nation’s most significant historic sites, and create opportunities for visitors to engage with the complex history and enduring relevance of the American experiment.
